How to properly store coffee to get the most out of it?
Do you know that wonderful feeling when you open a bag of freshly roasted coffee from your favorite roastery (Goriffee, of course!) and are greeted by that amazing aroma carrying the promise of delicious sips that will accompany you every morning, energize you at noon, or brighten your afternoon?
Of course you do, otherwise we wouldn't be meeting on this page! :-) But how should you store coffee so you can enjoy its perfect aroma and taste for as long as possible? Simply follow these tips:
An airtight, opaque container is essential
Coffee is a food product, which is why freshness is truly crucial. It is affected by the so-called 4 factors:
Air + Moisture + Too much light + High temperature
Well... okay, we used a little mnemonic help here, but that doesn't change the fact that these exact four factors determine how long your coffee will stay fresh.
The most important thing is to ensure that the coffee beans have minimal contact with air, which causes coffee to oxidize. Therefore, get an airtight container to protect it. Ideally, one from which air can also be vacuumed out (i.e., a vacuum container).
And while you're choosing one, definitely pick an opaque, dark container to protect it from light as well. Yes, we love how coffee beans look too, but unfortunately, transparent storage containers are truly unsuitable. Such an airtight, dark container will also prevent moisture from getting inside, covering three out of the four factors.
And what about temperature? It is truly sufficient to avoid storing coffee near heat sources such as a stove, oven, and the like. Similarly, a shelf exposed to sunlight for most of the day is not ideal. A dark, cool place with a stable temperature is optimal.
Buy coffee regularly in smaller batches
The simplest way to always have fresh coffee? Buy it regularly in smaller batches that you can comfortably consume within a reasonable time. In an ideal world, you would buy coffee roughly every two weeks, but having your supply last for a month is completely fine.
Our coffee subscription is perfect for precisely these cases, ensuring you can always rely on having fresh coffee at home! The key is always checking the roasting date when purchasing. You could buy coffee every week, but if it is not freshly roasted, it won't be of much help.
Freezing coffee – a good idea?
Freezing coffee as a long-term storage method is a topic that divides the coffee community, but generally, this storage method can also be considered. However, several points must be followed. First of all, divide the coffee into approximately weekly portions so that you do not have to repeatedly take it out and return it to the freezer. This prevents moisture from condensing on the coffee, which would subsequently freeze and ruin the coffee beans.
Remember that coffee absorbs odors. Therefore, always place it in the freezer in an airtight bag. If you have the option, vacuum sealing is ideal.
If you want to use coffee from the freezer, take it out at least a few hours prior to use. This allows it to reach room temperature while managing the aforementioned condensation.
And that's all. Simply put – buy an amount of coffee appropriate for your consumption and store it in an opaque, airtight container in a dark, cool place with a stable temperature. This way, you can enjoy it for the longest possible time without any loss of quality.
