Home coffee brewing 3: How to use an Aeropress

Erik Šimšík | April 30, 2020

The third recipe we will teach you to prepare at home is with our favorite Aeropress. The coffee maker was invented and patented only in 2005, but it spread extremely quickly all over the world. This is mainly due to its versatility.

For the favorite recipe of our colleague and Slovak Barista Champion Šimon Janík you will need:

  • 20 g of coffee,
  • 200 ml of water,
  • The water should have a temperature of 93°C
  • medium-coarse grind (like for v60)
  • We use the inverted method – the plunger is inserted from the bottom
  • We preheat the aeropress, rinse the filter to get rid of the paper taste

Ideal procedure according to Šimon:

  1. step: Place the Aeropress on a scale, pour in 20g of freshly ground coffee, level it and tare the scale, prepare a stopwatch
  2. step: In the first 30 seconds, pour 40g of water and stir thoroughly
  3. step: Pour the remaining 160g of water and stir thoroughly again
  4. step: Close the aeropress and at time 1:30 start pressing
  5. step: Try for a slow "press" of 30-40 seconds.
  6. step: Total brewing time 2:00-2:15 min

A small tip at the end: Don't forget to stir the coffee in the cup or decanter before serving. Flavors are released gradually, stirring brings them all together. Do not drink filtered coffee immediately after brewing, wait about 2-3 min. until it cools down slightly.

It has the most developed flavors at approximately 70-60 degrees. If the coffee tastes too "watery" to you, choose a finer grind. If the coffee tastes very intense or even bitter, choose a coarser grind instead. Cheers. :)
