How to brew coffee at home: Cold brew

Peter from Goriffee | August 8, 2022

For several summer seasons now, it has enjoyed great popularity on cafe patios, but it is not difficult to make at home and enjoy in the comfort of your own balcony. Every good espresso lover knows cold brew in the summer. Especially when, as the heat hits 35 degrees, an urgent switch to a cold option is needed. Get to know it in even more detail and try brewing it in your kitchen with a simple recipe.

Where did cold brew come from?

It might seem that cold brew took over seasonal drink menus only a few years ago. However, its origins reach far back into history and are connected to tea leaves. As early as the sixteenth century, the method of brewing tea by dripping cold water became established in Japan. Later, in Kyoto, this evolved into a method by which the Japanese began to cold-drip coffee as well. And the first cold brew was born. Today we would call it more of a cold drip, but the path to strict technological differences took another four centuries, until steeping became perhaps the most widespread method of making cold coffee.

Cold and slow

When brewing cold brew, two important factors also play the main role: water temperature and steep time. For cold brew to be truly cold, we pour cold filtered water over coarsely ground coffee and let it rest in it for 12 – 24 hours. And if there is a place where more is truly more, it is right here. The longer the chill we treat the coffee to, the more intense the flavor it delivers in our cup. However, there is plenty of room for experimentation in the steeping vessel, so don't hesitate to vary the extraction time and feel free to look for your ideal ratio.

We recommend starting with a ratio of 1:10. The chemistry between the beans and water will take care of the rest. Thanks to the long cold soak, you'll be sipping a drink on your balcony with a bold body, rich chocolate notes, but also a pleasant fruity sweetness. And do you know what your glass certainly won't lack? A strong dose of caffeine. Caffeine is particularly fond of long steeping, making cold brew a genuinely strong coffee drink.

What you need for home brewing:

  • French press
  • scale
  • 1 l of cold filtered water
  • 100 grams of freshly ground coffee (coarse grind)

How to make it

  1. Step 1: Grind the coffee coarsely, choosing a coarser grind than for a French press.
  2. Step 2: Place the French press on the scale and add 100 g of ground coffee.
  3. Step 3: Pour 1 l of cold filtered water into the French press and stir thoroughly.
  4. Step 4: Close it from the top.
  5. Step 5: Let it steep in a cool, dark place for at least 12 hours.
  6. Step 6: Once the chosen time has elapsed, filter the coffee.
  7. Step 7: Serve with an ice cube.
